Don Mahaffey

In 1984 Don began his turf career as Athletic Field Manager at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, CA. In 1990 he transitioned to golf as an irrigation technician, eventually earning his first Superintendent position in 1994. Don continued as a Golf Course Superintendent thru 2010 including carrying the dual role of GC Supt/General Manager (6 yrs), and GC Supt/Course Owner (2yrs), respectively, during that span.

In 2010 Don formed Greenscape Methods LLC (GM) at the urging of Al Stanger, owner of Wolf Point Ranch after Don had completed construction and grow in of what has become the highly acclaimed Wolf Point Club. From Don:

“Al Stanger was the most positive and optimistic man I’ve met. In 2006 Al hired Mike Nuzzo to design, and me to build, his personal golf course at his Wolf Point Ranch in South Texas. Al was a self-made man and while he knew it was a little out there to have your own golf course, he could afford it and he wanted it. And he wanted it to be great as he was constantly pushing Mike and I to be unafraid to challenge conventional wisdom in golf in the hope we would create something unique and special. With his encouragement we did just that. Al and I became great friends and his encouragement is why Greenscape Methods exists today. After Al’s death in 2016 we formed The Greenscape Methods Foundation to fund the Alfred T Stanger Memorial Scholarship for students studying for a career in golf. To date we have awarded twelve scholarships in Al’s name.”

Don favorite golf courses are The Old Course at St Andrews, Cypress Point, and The Kingsley Club. He enjoys traveling to off the beaten path golf courses, competing in US Masters Swimming/ Water Polo events, and searching for unique and interesting food where his business and pleasure takes him.
